Nashnall Portuguese Podengos were established in early 2005, when we purchased our first puppy bitch from the Plushcourt Kennel.
We started with Miniature Schnauzers in 1979, only ever keeping up to 4 dogs at any one time, as they all lived in the home as part of the family. Our first 2 puppies came from the famous Deansgate Kennels, one of whom was called Deansgate Abbie Nashnall and we registered the Nashnall affix soon afterwards with the Kennel club. Our subsequent pups were all home bred and shown at Open and Championship level, but were very much family pets. I served on the Northern Schnauzer club committee in the mid 1980's and I judge Minis at Open show level and at Matches etc.
We had been searching for a new breed for quite a long time as it had become increasingly difficult for me to keep up with all the trimming required for the show ring with our Miniature Schnauzers. We first saw the Portuguese Podengo advertised in a Rare Breeds Supplement, they sounded exactly what we wanted. We visited Plushcourt and fell in love with them straight away. They fitted all our requirements being a small dog, which required minimum grooming, an outgoing fun dog with a lovable temperament.
We were placed on a waiting list, and at last in January 2005 a litter was born which included Plushcourt Sarda and also Plushcourt Sultao who was to become Lux/Ned/Ire/Bel Intl. CH. We also visited the Monografica specialist show in Portugal in 2005 and were totally smitten with the breed.
Sarda's 1st litter was born in Sept 2006, and we kept 2 bithches, Nashnall Anjo and Nashnall Adriana (Anna) who have done very well in the show ring, along with their Dam Sarda. They have won many 1st prizes including Best Puppy, and Best Bitch at Championship shows. We also sold a bitch puppy from the same litter Nashnall Aldina at Caldermist, who has done exceptionally well in the ring at Championship level ,only to be joined by a dog pup we sold from Sarda's 2nd and last litter Nashnall Bandido at Caldermist , who again is having an amazing career in the ring and as a Good Citizen dog. Our thanks go to Angela and George Peddar (Caldermist )for campagining our dogs so well.
We are very proud of our Portuguese Podengos. Our aim is to maintain a small, quality, hobby kennel where the dogs live with and are part of the family. Where emphasis is on having fun, showing and living with our Podengos. Keith & I (Susan) have both served on the Portuguese Podengo Club of Great Britain committee. In January 2008 Podengos came off the Import Registar and were granted their own classes by the Kennel Club. In 2009 Podengos were shown for the 1st time at Crufts. We now look to the future and both serve on the committee of the Northern Poruguese Podengo Association (proposed), where Keith is proud to be Chairman.
